Transition Housing Solution (THS) Scotian Homes International

Materials: The THS system construction method uses 11 pre-fabricated, mass-produced structural components made of Canadian manufactured materials. The 8 components (3 floor + 4 walls+ 4 roofs) and fixtures can be designed with any number of diverse structural and/or building materials (wood, concrete, steel, reinforced clay, durock, sheetrock, concrete, bricks, bamboo and any combination of the above). Fixtures such as electrical and plumbing cable network can be part of the in factory prefabrication or can be incorporated in the country of destination.

Portability: All 11 basic components (3 floor + 4 walls + 4 roofs) are easily transportable to the job site per container or other means of transport. As indicated on our website (see pictures) the component can be handled by 2 men at the jobsite resulting in fast setting up of the structure.

Size: A basic suggested size is 96 sq.ft (8.9 m2). THS shelters are modular so two or more of them can be easily combined, so our building can be built in increments of 96 ft2 added to each other. Also a two story building can be engineered and built using this process, if so required.

Protection from the Elements: Any traditional and locally available waterproofing/insulating materials may be used for protection from the elements. Scotian Homes International can also supply these materials with this package.

Building and costs: The cost of setting up the THS shelters is minimal and will depend only on the transport to the jobsite. It can be put together in less then 2 hours so labor costs stay down. In crisis situations (post hurricane, tsunami) it can be assembled without any pneumatic tools. Simple hand tools will do the job. The THS Shelter system has been developed for fast implementation under the most adverse conditions and it has been designed to require just a minimal amount of energy and manpower. Essentially, a supervisor with only 2 to 3 skilled laborers is needed to erect a THS. No building contractor is necessary. With the supply of the special structural components, the THS shelter is structurally self-supporting and ready for instant use.

Instructions: A construction manual will be made available as part of the package.

Applications: International Emergency Relief Shelters, Affordable Housing Markets and School Programs world wide.

Adaptability: The THS shelter floor plan is flexible: the inside of the empty (but completely finished and waterproofed) shelter can be easily customized to meet the needs of any person(s), family or school and to meet any local regulations.

Recyclable: The THS Shelter can be disassembled, removed and rebuilt elsewhere.

Additional: This new THS construction system can be made available, to governments, or to non-profit organizations/entities that need to quickly and affordably provide shelters, housing and/or class rooms. A THS Shelter is engineered to withstand earthquakes, high winds and flood conditions.
